How does Purecopeia select ingredients for its products?

We are meticulous in selecting and sourcing ingredients for our products. Our first considerations, always, are the health and safety of our customers and the welfare of the natural environment. Our primary objective is to ensure that our range is formulated using only the safest ingredients of the highest quality.

Accordingly, all ingredients utilised in Purecopeia formulations are extensively researched with respect to their safety, stability and efficacy. This is standard procedure for every ingredient under consideration, regardless of type; each is included only when its safety and efficacy have been thoroughly evaluated.

In addition to this stringent research, our products are tested for safety during the development process, using cumulative irritancy testing on human volunteers. Prior to release, each of our products must also pass a Product Safety Assessment and Toxicological review, conducted by an independent qualified agency.

Are purecopeia cosmetic and their ingredients tested on animals?

No and we believe that science can end animal testing. Our cosmetics and ingredients have never been tested on animals.

Are purecopeia cosmetics vegan?

95% of our cosmetics are vegan and we marked them vegan-friendly. When we use animal-derived ingredients such as bees wax, goat milk – they are obtained without any harm to animals. We have never used animal ingredients that are obtained in a harmful way and never used ingredients from dead animal bodies.

Do Purecopeia skin and body care products contain ingredients from a petrochemical source?

We do not use ingredients derived from crude oil, such as petrolatum or mineral oil, in any of our products formulated for the skin.

Our use of ingredients derived from any petrochemical source comes down to function. These ingredients perform useful functions; without them, our formulations might not have all their essential and often unique qualities. We include many useful and functional synthetic ingredients in our formulations, which by their very nature may be derived from a petrochemical source, either wholly or in part.

Any ingredient derived from a petrochemical source is significantly chemically modified from its petrochemical origin, and utilised on grounds of efficacy, stability, or—in the case of preservatives—to ensure the product is safe and stable during its lifetime and under conditions of use.

Will the plant extracts of Purecopeia products make my skin oily?

Scientifically speaking, botanical oils closely resemble human skin in terms of their physical and chemical composition. This means formulations containing these extracts are easily absorbed by the skin.

There are three key types of plant extracts we use in our products: freeze-dried extracts, steam and CO2 extracted oils and crushed or total extracted oils.

All of the oils obtained by these methods are light and greaseless (and more volatile) when compared to synthetic mineral oils.

Do Purecopeia products contain plastic microbeads/microplastics?

No Purecopeia product contains plastic microbeads or microplastics; we have never utilised such ingredients.

Our exfoliating products contain abrasives such as Quartz, Pumice, Walnut Shell, Tea Tree Leaf and Bamboo Stem to gently yet efficiently slough away dead surface skin cells, help lift dirt and grime, and leave skin softened and thoroughly cleansed—the better to absorb hydration.

Do Purecopeia products contain Phenoxyethanol?

Phenoxyethanol is a highly effective, versatile preservative that confers anti-microbial benefits—preventing the growth and reproduction of micro-organisms.

We utilise Phenoxyethanol in a number of our formulations due to its wide-ranging efficacy.

Phenoxyethanol has been assessed as safe for use in cosmetic products by leading cosmetic agencies in the USA, UK, Europe and Asia, among others, at use levels up to one per cent. Its inclusion in select Purecopeia products is at levels well below the limits set by global regulatory agencies.

Do Purecopeia products contain parabens?

We do not use ingredients derived from crude oil, such as petrolatum or mineral oil, in any of our products.

Do Purecopeia products contain the preservatives Methylchloroisothiazolinone (MCIT) and Methylisothiazolinone (MIT)?

Purecopeia does not use MIT or MCIT in any product designed to be left on the skin.

Do Purecopeia products contain preservatives?

Preservatives are a necessary and sensible part of all personal care formulations—and crucial to the performance and longevity of our products.

We include preservatives because we use many botanical ingredients which otherwise would not make it to your shelf in their most useful state; however, please be assured the doses of preservatives used are as small as possible. We also use other non-botanical ingredients to help keep products stable, blended and effective. By employing this methodology, we have eliminated the need for larger doses of preservatives, which can irritate sensitive skin types.

We are constantly evaluating new laboratory-made and botanical preservatives as they become available. This ensures our methodologies and formulations employ the very latest thinking and ingredients.

All ingredients included in Purecopeia formulations are extensively researched for their safety, stability and efficacy. This is standard procedure for every ingredient under consideration for use by Purecopeia, regardless of type.

The presence of preservatives within our products is clearly labelled, forming part of the ingredient list.

Do Purecopeia products contain synthetic fragrance?

Purecopeia fragrances are primarily made using ingredients derived from natural sources, on some occasions utilising alternative techniques—for example, Co extraction or molecular distillation—to create and achieve different character or depth in the fragrance. Where synthetic ingredients are utilised, their purpose is to ensure superior longevity or achieve a desired aromatic effect.

We utilise this combination of ingredients with varying origins to achieve a fragrance that is more intense and complex, and of greater staying power, than could be formulated using essential oils alone.

How should I store my Purecopeia products?

We recommend you keep your products in a cool place away from direct light, or better yet, in the refrigerator. This advice applies for all Purecopeia products, regardless of whether they are contained in glass, plastic or aluminium.

The label on your Purecopeia product displays an icon, next to the batch number, that tells you how many months your product will be at its best.

It is best to use clean hands when dipping into jars, or to use a teaspoon or small spatula to scoop out product for use.

Can I use Purecopeia hydrating products under makeup?

Yes, Purecopeia creams, serums and oils can be worn under makeup.

Some wonder whether the high content of botanical ingredients will interfere with makeup, but it will not. However, you may like to experiment with the time it takes for your preferred Purecopeia hydrating product to fully absorb into your skin prior to applying your makeup.

What if I have an adverse reaction to an Purecopeia product?

All cosmetic ingredients have the potential to irritate sensitive skin regardless of the amount present in an individual product or the method in which it is used.

Irritations can sometimes occur in the regular course of our daily lives, even where we have used and enjoyed a product successfully for many years. The trigger for a reaction can be an unexpected one and may not necessarily repeat itself in the same way. We ask that you consider any changes to your regular routine that may have triggered the reaction (dietary, contact with possible allergens such as household cleaning liquids etc.).

Where one experiences an adverse reaction to any cosmetic preparation, the best course of action is to discontinue use and if necessary, consult your medical practitioner to establish whether you have experienced an irritation or an allergy.

Do Purecopeia products have an expiry date?

The ‘best before’ measure of your Purecopeia product is determined by the time of opening. The jar icon on the side of the label indicates the number of months the product will be at its best once open. For example, 12M equals one year from date of opening, 9M equals nine months from date of opening. Besides that an expiry of product is also mentioned on product labeling & packaging.

Do Purecopeia products contain alcohol?

When we use the term ‘alcohol-free’ in association with our products, we are referring to the fact that the formulation does not contain Ethyl Alcohol.

By way of explanation, ‘alcohol’ denotes a general chemical category that refers to many different substances with broadly different properties and uses.

Ethyl Alcohol (also called Ethanol) is the most commonly known alcohol—this is the substance found in alcoholic drinks. It is a small molecule that evaporates readily because of its size and chemical properties.

We use ethyl alchol in our hand sanitizers.

What are the effects of topically applied vitamins on my skin?

Many vitamins used in our skin care products are included primarily to provide anti-oxidant defence against free radicals.

The incidence of these reactive, airborne compounds is growing, and when they attach to your skin they oxidise, causing damage. A simple analogy is a sliced apple. Left unprotected, the flesh of the apple quickly turns brown as it reacts with the air, but lemon juice (a potent anti-oxidant) squeezed over the apple will dramatically slow this process.

While providing anti-oxidant protection, some vitamins can also assist in hydrating and softening the skin.

Will Purecopeia products aggravate sensitive skin?

Skin sensitivities can be unpredictable. If you have experienced a reaction, we recommend you stop using all products for a full week. This will give your skin the chance to recover from whatever was aggravating it.

You may wish to test the Purecopeia products you have on separate patches of skin away from your face. Allow twenty-four hours to assess your skin’s response. If you find there is no reaction, repeat the process. Again, allow twenty-four hours for assessment.

If neither of these tests results in an adverse reaction, apply a small amount of your product to your face. Use less product than you normally would in the first instance, then slowly increase the amount. If your skin reacts or symptoms persist despite not using any products, we suggest you consult with a dermatologist.
